Created by legendary Finnish designer Alvar Aalto in 1933, the Stool 60 represents the pinnacle of functionalist furniture design, characterised by its revolutionary curved L-leg. Crafted from birch wood, the idea behind the Stool 60 Collection was a simple one: to create a stackable, versatile seating solution. The concept was born when Aalto was asked to design the building and furniture for the municipal library at Viipuri, at the eastern edge of Finland, which led him to invent the innovative L-leg. By bending a piece of birch to a curved 90° angle, the L-leg could be fastened directly to the seat, eliminating the need for complicated framework or support and creating Aalto's signature spare, streamlined and simple aesthetic. Aalto's work was and remains appealing due to its warmth, humanity and common sense, with the designer himself believing that we should work for simple, good, undecorated things, but things that are in harmony with the human being. The instantly recognisable Stool 60 is crafted today to exacting standards by Artek, created with birch wood in a selection of vibrant and muted seat colours to suit every interior.
