Description

A simple, bold expressive line drawing, Nadia Au Cheveux Lisse translates to 'Nadia with Smooth Hair', a classic example of artist Henri Matisse's later work. Originally from 1948, the drawing depicts an elegant profile portrait of Nadia, a model who frequently posed for Matisse during his later years. Made in the UK, the frame is made of solid, hand-stained ash wood. The high-quality image resolution is reproduced on fine art paper and presented behind high-clarity and UV-protected acrylic. Henri Matisse was known for his fluid use of colour and is recognised as a leading figure in modern art in the early twentieth century. Over six decades, he carved a career using all forms of media, including drawing, sculpture and printmaking. Born 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France, he was originally a legal clerk. He began drawing at an evening class before moving to Paris in 1891 to pursue his vocation as an artist. It wasn't until the beginning of the twentieth century when he had his major creative breakthrough. A visit to Saint-Tropez inspired him to paint a bright, light-dappled canvas. He continued this style, which became known as Fauvism. Some of his most noted pieces happened during his later years. He was often bedridden due to illness and surgery but he still managed to produce breakthrough works using paper cut-outs. Have you thought about wall hooks and fittings?

Our Stylist Says

I love this print for its modern take on a classic artwork, making it versatile for a variety of interiors. Its monochrome palette works particularly well in minimalist, contemporary, or monochromatic settings, but it can also add contrast to more colourful schemes. Position it above a sofa or console table for a focal point, or use multiple prints in a gallery wall for impact. Practical styling tips include pairing it with sleek black or white frames to keep the look sharp, and balancing with softer textures like cushions or throws to prevent the space from feeling too stark. It’s a great piece to add personality while maintaining a clean, modern vibe.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
