Description

A selection of truly unique and totally individual traditional hand-knotted rugs, this range from Gooch Oriental showcases rugs created by different artisans across town and village locations across the world, including traditional Persian creations. Each piece is carefully selected by the Gooch Oriental team to ensure it's authenticity, quality and finish. Each one is knotted by hand, an intricate process using traditional hand knotting techniques. As such, no two pieces are the same, meaning you can add an authentic and unique piece of crafted design into your home, whilst supporting this heritage industry. The Afghan Ziegler style (or Chobi style) is mainly made by Turkmen tribes of Afghanistan settled in the northern provinces of Faryab, Jawozjan, and Mazar-e-Sharif. The wool used is hand spun and then dyed using natural vegetable dyes before being hand knotted using a unique technique of twisting the yarn twice before double knotting. The rugs are then transported to Pakistan where they are expertly finished including washing and trimming using the traditional methods. The word Chobi translates from traditional Afghan language Dari to mean wood, referring to the natural colours used in the designs. Within the last 30 years Ziegler designs have been rediscovered and old ideas revived. The wool used is from the central Ghazni province of Afghanistan. Knot count per 1sqm - Approx 140000 + knots giving a low-density pile. The benefits of a wool rug Warm and durable, wool feels beautifully soft underfoot and is long-lasting Naturally flame-retardant and odour resistant Water repellent so easier to clean Naturally biodegradable, wool is part of the circular economy and contains no micro plastics This rug has been knotted by hand, the oldest and most individual way a rug can be made. This involves an intricate process of weaving by hand on a loom where yarns are tied one at a time, giving the rug a durable construction. About your new rug We recommend John Lewis & Partners Rug Hold Underlay. It prevents your rug from moving underfoot and protects against colour transfer to the floor As this rug is made using natural fibres, shedding is to be expected. This will reduce over time, and should not have an impact on the lifespan or performance of your rug. When you first get your rug, please use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner whilst the shedding dies down. After that, when vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres. When vacuuming your rug, use suction only. Rotating brushes may damage the fibres Blot any spills with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub or use harsh detergents. Textile backed Attend to spillages immediately and blot with a clean, dry cloth to prevent staining. Dilute a small amount of appropriate carpet shampoo in water. Dampen a colourfast cloth in the diluted shampoo solution and dab the rug, lightly agitating, moving in the direction of the pile. Treat the whole rug and not just the affected area. To restore the appearance of the affected area, use a soft bristled brush to gently comb in the direction of the pile. Allow the rug to thoroughly dry.

About John Lewis

Founded in 1864, John Lewis is a trusted and beloved brand where you can find a diverse range of furniture for every style and budget, alongside finding the perfect item that reflects your personal taste.

A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion

John Lewis started as a small shop on London's Oxford Street in 1864. Today, it's part of a bigger family called the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose stores.

What makes them special is that they're owned by their employees, known as 'Partners'. The idea, from the beginning, was to give everyone a say in how the business was run. With over 74,000 Partners (employees) at the heart of its operations, the essence of John Lewis's vision, from over a century ago, still echoes today being the largest employee-owned venture.

Adapting to Changing Times

Like many stores, John Lewis has had to change with the times. They've closed some shops but have grown their online business a lot, especially when more people started shopping online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their history is filled with key moments, like buying Peter Jones in 1905, adding Waitrose in 1937, and starting their website in 2001. They've always tried to adapt and stay relevant.

Commitment to a Greater Purpose

John Lewis believes in doing good and making the world a better place. This is seen in the way they treat their employees and customers. For example, in 2021, they were the first big UK store to give parents six months paid leave when they have a baby and two weeks paid leave if they lose a pregnancy. They've been around for over a century and always aim to do the right thing by everyone.
