Designing a chair generally involves seeking the essence of the typology to reduce it to its minimum in the hope of making it a sign so pure that it becomes universal and no longer refers to anything other than its function. Gelato offers just the opposite! With it, the formal expression of the function is reduced to the strict minimum in favour of a plastic formalisation free of any preconception or acquired knowledge. Freed from all the signs and characteristics that allow us to identify or distinguish a chair, Gelato makes a clean sweep of our representations and offers a totally questioning approach. A true statement, the Gelato chair by Jean-Baptiste Fastrez, fluid and slender, imposes an extraordinary sculptural presence reinforced by a brutal contrast with the elementary geometry of its pedestal in which the body of the chair is anchored to become one. Sculpture or chair, the ambiguity remains until you sit on it and experience its total comfort and welcoming character. Made in France, ultra-robust, the Gelato chair uses recycled materials and zero-waste manufacturing techniques. Thanks to its invisible zip that runs all along the back, its seamless cover is very easily removed, placed in the washing machine and put back on again as you would put on a fitted dress zipped up the back. A graduate of Ensci (National School for Industrial Creation), Jean-Baptiste Fastrez took his first steps under the direction of François Azambourg, then the Bouroullec brothers. Since then, he has ploughed his own furrow: hybrid and ultra-creative!
