Bed Sizes from Single to King

How to choose the right bed size can be a difficult task. You google different bed sizes and then find yourself lying down on the floor surrounded by measuring tape. You test further by rolling around to see if you would roll off your bed during the night when tossing and turning. However, I have some information that will help you sleep comfortably without the need for a game of Twister….unless you want to then go ahead, have fun!

Single bed

The size of a single bed is 90 x 190cm. If you are looking to buy a bed for a child or young teenager a single bed is all you need size wise. It’s perfect for a guest room as it won’t take up much space, allowing ample storage space for all your spare bits and bobs. A single mattress also allows more bedroom space for your interior decorating mind to go wild!

Small double bed

The size of a small double bed is 120cm x 190cm. This bed is an excellent for a single person who wants the the ability to stretch out in the night without a tumble. It can also be beneficial for a room that might not quite fit a standard double. This size of bed is a great compromise between a single bed and a standard size double bed. This size is not too small or too big for one person, unless you are Goldilocks. A small double bed will be cheaper than a standard size double bed, so great if you are on a tight budget.

Double bed

The size of a double bed is 135cm x 190cm. A standard size double bed is good for couples and singles with small to average sized bedrooms. The size of a standard double is also useful for space optimisation. It’s not quite as dominating as a king but offers more presence than a small double. Too large a bed and you’ll be struggling to find a place for you bedside table. Too small a bed and you’ll be filling the room with ginormous teddy bears to plug the gaps. At only 15cm wider than the small double, you may not think it is much of a difference. But trust me, it makes all the difference when your young kids want to cram into the bed (at 6am on a Saturday morning!!)

King size bed

The size of a king bed is 150cm x 200cm. This size offers plenty of space for each person and is especially good for those taller than 190cm (no more cold feet!). Perfect for a couple who find each other’s movements disturbing. Also terrific for a single sleeper who loves to perform a starfish impression at night. There are many health benefits to good quality sleep. If being able to stretch out at night will boost your sleep quality, then King is king.

Choosing the right size

It’s important to ensure you have enough space around the bed. Calculate the dimensions of your bedroom using a simple formula: length x width = area. If your room isn’t square shaped, split the room into different sections. Calculate both sections then add them together. Now you have the bedroom size, you can think about the size of the bed you want. Your bed should have two feet of walking space surrounding it. Also ensure doors, closets and drawers can freely open without any obstructions. I recommend a ratio of 1:3 between the bed and bedroom. This can be a challenge depending on the size of your bedroom. An example following this advice would be, that for a king size bed (150cm x 200cm) you would need a 600cm x 800cm bedroom. Allow at least 30 inches (76cm) between the sides and ends of the bed and the nearest piece of furniture or wall.

You want to avoid having someone’s feet hanging out the end of the bed all night. Choose a bed at least 10cm longer than the tallest person who will be sleeping in it. Someone who is taller than 5ft 11” (180cm) will find a king size bed provides greatest comfort. A general rule of thumb is to check if a bed is big enough for both you and your partner. You should be able to lie on your back with your hands behind your head without your elbows touching each other or the edge of the bed.

When it comes to investing in a new bed it can be a big decision as we do spend one third of our lives sleeping in it. A massive factor for most people when buying a new bed is the cost. I would say spend as much as you can afford. A bed is a long-term investment so don’t hold back. Studies show the bigger the bed, the better the sleep. But don’t apply this rule to meals though or you’ll be looking for an emperor size bed!
